Dubbel En Dwars Huis

Within the new terrain of the Bouwmij competition near the city centre of Leiden, the Dubbel en Dwars house occupies a double size plot giving an extra generosity in plan and outside space.  The street level studio for guests creates a new datum on which the rest of the house and garden then sits. The open living zone with garden is therefore above street level, with sleeping rooms above. On this upper level, privacy, and transparency are achieved by the use of screens, providing adjustable oblique and direct visual connections to the garden below.   Berger Barnett Architecten won third prize in the Bouwmij Competition.
