SO De Heldring – Climate Neutral!

The school in Buiksloterham, Amsterdam Noord, was conceived as climate neutral (klimaatneutraal), but an initiative by the Stadsdeel Noord en Projectbureau Noordwaards, to finance the extra investment through an ESCO (Energy Service Company) was delayed.

Now with finance from the DMO (Dienst Maatschappelijke Ontwikkeling) and Stichting Kolom, the original ambition can go ahead.

The school uses heat centrally produced (stadsverwarming) as a byproduct from processed rubbish. ABT engineered a cutting edge installation using advanced heat exchange and adiabatic cooling making the school energy efficient. Contractor, Vinkbouw, will start on site 4th June 2012.

SO De Heldring Signing

The contract has been signed (26.04.12) on SO De Heldring School between the contractor and the Stichting De Kolom. The ceremony took place in the schools current accommodation in Amsterdam North which is situated near to where the new school will be located.

Workshop and Queens Day in Oman

As part of the LEX Group we organized an all day celebration for Queens Day in Oman on April 18th, by profiling Dutch Architecture and Design.

Jo Barnett concluded a series of lectures in the morning that led into afternoon workshops. Groups of design students, worked together on the Identity of Muscat. The results were exhibited at a party alongside work from architectural practices across the Netherlands, which concluded the day in a typically festive Queens Day atmosphere.

The LEX group works in the Middle East to promote the exchange of expertise in the field of educational buildings. The group includes, LIAG architects, ICS Adviseurs, AgentschapNL, CD 20, Cinop, Step, Kennisnet, and ABT.

Oyster House One – New Leyden

The BMS is featured in the Development Office of the Municipality of Amsterdam’s Project Book 2010-2011. ( pages 172-173 ) This modest adaptation to an existing school continues to have a large impact.

Research into Schools/Church

Our presentation of the research into The Catherina Complex, in West Amsterdam – took place on the 8^th December.

An extensive collection of drawings, photographs, texts, analysis, design proposals is now collected together. A selection of this information is published into a preliminary book, which gave everyone who attended the meeting, an idea of the quality of the design and philosophy behind the complex.

It is now hoped to develop the project into a public exhibition and a more extensive publication.

BMS Opening News

The children cut the celebratory ribbon last Friday to the new extension to the BMS school.

They were joined by their parents, teachers, friends and the local councellor Simone Kukenheim. Everyone was treated to the results of the special celebratory drawing competition that was held across all 3 levels of the school as part of the festivities. Everyone agreed it was a great start to the new academic year.

Research into Schools/Church Complex

We are undertaking research into the regeneration of the Evers and Sarlemijn schools / church complex (1957) in Amsterdam- Nieuw West ( the Catherina Complex ). Some original drawings of this finely detailed urban block have been retrieved and with the help of the Monumentenzorg we are establishing which parts of the building can be adapted and restored.
