The BMS is featured in the Development Office of the Municipality of Amsterdam’s Project Book  2010-2011. ( pages 172-173 ) This modest adaptation to an existing school continues to have a large impact.

Research into Schools/Church

Our presentation of the research into The Catherina Complex, in West Amsterdam – took place on the 8th December.

An extensive collection of drawings, photographs, texts, analysis, design proposals is now collected together. A selection of this information is published into a preliminary book, which gave everyone who attended the meeting, an idea of the quality of the design and philosophy behind the complex. 

It is now hoped to develop the project into a public exhibition and a more extensive publication.

BMS Opening News

29-09-2011

The children cut the celebratory ribbon last Friday to the new extension to the BMS school.

They were joined by their parents, teachers, friends and the local councellor Simone Kukenheim. Everyone was treated to the results of the special celebratory drawing competition that was held across all 3 levels of the school as part of the festivities. Everyone agreed it was a great start to the new academic year.

Research into Schools/Church Complex

We are undertaking research into the regeneration of the Evers and Sarlemijn schools / church complex (1957) in Amsterdam- Nieuw West ( the Catherina Complex ). Some original drawings of this finely detailed urban block have been retrieved and with the help of the Monumentenzorg we are establishing which parts of the building can be adapted and restored.

Our research project for the Stimuleringsfonds voor Architectuur ( SfA)  is now published in Lay-out  16;  1+1=3, Op zoek naar de meerwaarde van brede scholen  (1+1=3, Seeking the added value for multifunctional schoolbuildings) . It  was presented at the closing event of the Netwerkbureau Kinderopvang  (Childcare Network ) in Den Haag on the 22 June. Lay-out 16 is also available as a pdf download from our website.

BMS

The BMS is finally finished and the school has moved into its newly extended accommodation. The school has continued to function during the building works which provided much needed extra space. Internal reworking of parts of the interior allows for the development of a library at the heart of the school.

The Latin proverb  “ Gallus in suo sterquilinio plurimum potest”  forms part of the etched pattern on the screen of the Dubbel en Dwars Huis (the Wide House) and is a highlighted project in this months A10 magazines “ Maleable Metal”  feature.

Presentation at the BMS

In the setting of the almost completed extension to the BMS school in Buitenverldert, Berger Barnett presented their guidelines for assessment of schools in multifunctional accommodation to a steering group from Zaandam. This was the starting point for a day of visits to multifunctional buildings in and around the Amsterdam area.
